But such claims can mislead consumers when they are vague, selective or unsupported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this, the <strong>Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA)<\/strong> issued the <a href=\"https:\/\/consumeraffairs.gov.in\/public\/upload\/admin\/cmsfiles\/whatsnews\/The_Guidelines_for_Prevention_and_Regulation_of_Greenwashing_or_Misleading_Environmental_Claims,_2024_whatsnews.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/consumeraffairs.gov.in\/public\/upload\/admin\/cmsfiles\/whatsnews\/The_Guidelines_for_Prevention_and_Regulation_of_Greenwashing_or_Misleading_Environmental_Claims,_2024_whatsnews.pdf\"><em>Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Greenwashing or Misleading Environmental Claims, 2024<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guidelines require environmental claims made by businesses to be truthful, clear and supported by evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is greenwashing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenwashing means making a product or service appear more environmentally responsible than it actually is through misleading claims, omissions or exaggeration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Making vague or false environmental claims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlighting positive environmental features while hiding relevant information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using misleading words, symbols or imagery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making claims without supporting evidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental claims need clear proof<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guidelines address commonly used terms such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eco-friendly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cruelty-free<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon neutral<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimal impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regenerative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such terms must not be used without clear explanation and verifiable evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An environmental claim should clearly state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What it applies to: the product, packaging, process or service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What environmental benefit is being claimed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether it applies to the whole product or only one part<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence, methodology or certification supports it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if only the packaging is recyclable, the entire product should not be described as recyclable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, a claim such as <strong>\u201cmade from recycled material\u201d<\/strong> should specify what contains recycled material and to what extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">QR codes and URLs can support detailed disclosure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guidelines allow detailed material information supporting an environmental claim to be provided through a <strong>QR code or URL<\/strong> in relevant advertisements or communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Environmental data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scope and basis of the claim<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certifications or test reports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycling information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methodology supporting the claim<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a QR code does not make an unsupported claim valid. The disclosed information must still be accurate and consistent with the claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparisons and certifications must be genuine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claims such as <strong>\u201cgreener than competitors\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cbetter for the environment\u201d<\/strong> must be based on relevant and verifiable data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses should also not use claims such as <strong>\u201ccertified green\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201capproved sustainable\u201d<\/strong> unless the certification or endorsement is valid and supported by a credible authority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental claims such as \u201ceco-friendly,\u201d \u201cgreen,\u201d \u201csustainable,\u201d \u201crecyclable\u201d and \u201ccarbon neutral\u201d are increasingly used in product packaging, advertisements and brand communication.
